Things to do in Bârsana

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Bârsana

A village in the Iza valley with two things of the same name: an eighteenth century wooden church on the UNESCO list, and a monastery complex built from 1993 that has become the most visited religious site in Maramureș. The monastery is new, and it is honest about that. It was built in the old technique by local carpenters and its spire reaches 57 metres, which makes it a fair introduction to what the valley's builders can still do.

  1. Bârsana Wooden Church

    Church · 30 min

Two things in this village answer to the name, and the famous one is not the listed one. The UNESCO church is the small wooden building alone on the cemetery hill, not the monastic complex begun in the nineteen nineties along the road.

  2. Ieud Deal Wooden Church

    Church · 30 min

The oldest wooden church in Maramureș, dated to about 1364 by tradition and to the 1600s by dendrochronology, on the UNESCO list, standing on a hill above the village with its painted interior intact.

  3. Poienile Izei Wooden Church

    Church · 30 min

A church of 1604 on the UNESCO list, holding the most complete and the most frightening Last Judgement painting in Maramureș, with punishments matched to specific sins along the north wall.
