Ninety seconds on Deva

A county town under a volcanic cone with a ruined citadel on top of it, reached by an inclined lift that runs up the north face. The hill is a botanical reserve as well as a monument, and the horned viper that lives on it is the reason for the fences. The town below is administrative rather than picturesque. It is worth an afternoon on the way between Corvin Castle and the Dacian fortresses, and the view from the citadel explains the whole Mureș corridor at a glance.

  1. Deva Citadel

    Fortress · 2 hr

    A thirteenth century fortress on a 371 metre volcanic cone, blown up in 1849 when its powder magazine went, and consolidated as a ruin. The lift takes three minutes and the walk takes forty.

  2. Magna Curia

    Museum · 1.5 hr

    The Renaissance and later Baroque residence at the foot of the citadel hill, built in 1621 for Gábor Bethlen and now the county museum of Dacian and Roman archaeology. Its garden holds carved stones from Ulpia Traiana.
