Ninety seconds on Hunedoara
An iron town in the Poiana Ruscă foothills, with a steelworks that shaped it through the twentieth century and a castle that predates all of it by five hundred years. The two stand within sight of each other and the contrast is not softened. Most people come for the castle and leave within three hours, which is a reasonable plan. Deva and the Dacian sites in the Orăștie mountains are both under an hour away and make the drive worth extending.
The largest gothic castle in the country, built from the 1440s by John Hunyadi on a rock above the Zlaști, with a long timber bridge on stone piers as its only approach. The knights' hall, the council hall and the well the Ottoman prisoners are said to have dug over fifteen years are the set pieces.
