Ninety seconds on Orăștie

A small market town on the Mureș that is the road head for the Dacian fortresses in the mountains to the south. The town itself has a fortified church precinct where a gothic Lutheran church and a Calvinist one share one wall. What brings people is above it. Six fortresses built between the first century before and the second century after the common era are on the UNESCO list, and the last stretch to the capital is a rough forest road that has been closed for works more than once.

  1. Costești-Blidaru

    Archaeological Site · 2 hr

    The strongest of the outlying fortresses, two enclosures on a spur with a tower keep, built to hold the valley road rather than to be lived in. The climb is about an hour through beech forest.

  2. Costești-Cetățuie

    Archaeological Site · 1.5 hr

    The first of the Dacian fortresses on the way up, a hill fort with two towers built in the murus dacicus technique of dressed stone facing a rubble core tied with timber beams. It is the easiest of the six to reach.

  3. Sarmizegetusa Regia

    Archaeological Site · 3 hr

    The capital of the Dacian kingdom at 1,200 metres in the Orăștie mountains, taken by Trajan in 106 and never rebuilt. A paved sacred precinct holds circular and rectangular sanctuaries and the andesite sun disc, and the site is reached on foot from the road head.
