Ninety seconds on Turda

A salt town on the road between Cluj and Alba Iulia, worked for salt since Roman times and industrial for most of the twentieth century. Its mine closed in 1932 and reopened in 2010 as something that has no real precedent. The gorge eight kilometres west is the other reason to stop. Between them they make a day that goes 120 metres underground in the morning and up a limestone canyon in the afternoon.

  1. Salina Turda

    Landmark · 2.5 hr

    A salt mine worked from the Roman period to 1932, reopened as a visitor site with a Ferris wheel, a boating lake and an amphitheatre installed in chambers up to 120 metres deep. The Rudolf chamber is 42 metres to its ceiling and the air is used as a halotherapy treatment.

  2. Turda Gorge

    Canyon · 3 hr

    A limestone gorge nearly three kilometres long with walls up to 300 metres, crossed on footbridges and cut by the Hășdate. About a thousand plant species have been recorded in it and the path is scrambly in places.
