Ninety seconds on Layou

Dominica's longest river reaches the sea at Layou, wide and shallow over the last stretch before it does. The bathing along it is the calmest fresh water on the island and needs no walk to reach. The valley behind it holds a string of waterfalls and pools reached on short walks off the road, and the rock steps cut by maroons who held this interior in the early nineteenth century. The river bathing here is the calmest on Dominica.

  1. Jacko Falls

    Waterfall · 2 hr

    A fall in the Layou valley below the maroon country, reached on a short walk in from the road through cocoa and forest.

  2. Jacko Steps

    Landmark · 2.5 hr

    Steps cut into the rock of the Layou gorge by maroons, the escaped enslaved who held the interior into the early nineteenth century, and named for the leader killed here in 1814.

  3. Layou River

    Waterfront · 1.5 hr

    The longest river on Dominica, wide and shallow where it reaches the west coast, with bathing pools along the lower valley. It is the standard place on the island to swim in fresh water without a walk.

  4. Salton Falls

    Waterfall · 1.5 hr

    A fall on a tributary in the middle valley, reached on a short marked path, quieter than the Layou falls nearer the road.

  5. Spanny Falls

    Waterfall · 2 hr

    A pair of falls in the valley above Layou, the first reached in about fifteen minutes and the second by a rougher scramble beyond it.
