Ninety seconds on Mero

Long beaches are scarce on Dominica and this is one of them, dark volcanic sand on the sheltered leeward side where the water stays flat almost every day of the year. The coast either side holds the island's last working rum distillery, still driven by a water wheel and cane grown on the estate around it. This is the stretch most day visitors are brought to for a beach.

    A dark sand beach south of Mero at the mouth of the Macoucherie river, quieter than its neighbour and backed by the estate that gives it its name.

  2. Macoucherie Distillery

    Landmark · 1 hr

    The last commercial rum distillery working on Dominica, pressing cane grown on its own estate with a water wheel and distilling in the French agricole manner.

  3. Mero Black Sand Beach

    Beach · 2 hr

    A long strip of grey volcanic sand on the sheltered west coast, the most used swimming beach on the island, with the water flat almost every day of the year.

  4. Salisbury Beach

    Beach · 1.5 hr

    A stretch of grey sand north of Mero on the same sheltered coast, used more by the village than by visitors.
