Things to do in Kolašin

A mountain town on the Tara river between the Bjelasica and Sinjajevina ranges, and the country's most developed winter resort, with lifts at Kolasin 1450 and 1600 above the town. In summer it is the base for Biogradska Gora, one of the last stands of primeval forest in Europe, about 15 miles away around a glacial lake. The drive up from Podgorica takes roughly an hour through the Moraca canyon and is worth the time in its own right.

  1. Moraca River Gorge

    Viewpoint · 1 hr

A narrow canyon carved by the Morača River with sheer 1,000-foot red and grey stone walls, traversed by the main road from Podgorica northward. The river is home to trout and traditional stone bridges.

  2. Biogradska Gora National Park

    Park · 3 hr

One of the last fragments of primeval forest in Europe, ringing a glacial lake at about 1,100 metres between Kolasin and Mojkovac. The lakeside circuit takes around an hour under trees up to five centuries old, and marked trails climb toward the Bjelasica ridgeline above.

  3. Morača Monastery

    Monastery · 30 min

A Serbian Orthodox monastery founded in 1252 on a terrace above the Moraca canyon, holding some of the country's most important medieval fresco painting. It sits just off the Podgorica to Kolasin road, which makes it the natural stop on the drive north.
