Things to do in Kotor

A fortified town at the head of the Bay of Kotor, wedged between the water and the near vertical wall of Mount Lovcen. Venetian ramparts run from the sea up to the fortress of San Giovanni, a climb of roughly 1,350 steps, and the walled town below is a knot of small squares, the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon among them, consecrated in 1166. The bay and its towns have been UNESCO listed since 1979. Cruise ships dock a few minutes from the gate, so the old town runs hot between mid morning and late afternoon and empties in the evening. Two or three days is enough to see the town properly and reach Perast, Risan and the Lovcen road above.
