Ninety seconds on Risan
The oldest settlement in the bay, an Illyrian stronghold before it was Roman, and the seat of Queen Teuta in the third century BC. What survives best is the floor of a Roman villa, including a mosaic of Hypnos, the god of sleep, which is thought to be the only one of its kind in this part of the Adriatic. Risan is a working town rather than a resort, quieter and cheaper than Perast a few kilometres down the shore. It suits a half day built around the mosaics and the waterfront, or a night for travellers who would rather sleep away from the crowds.
A 30-minute stop for anyone interested in antiquity; check seasonal opening hours before driving over.
A Roman port on the inner Bay of Kotor with Byzantine and Venetian archaeology; smaller and less touristed than Kotor, with a waterfront and scattered palaces.
