Ninety seconds on Grootfontein

Limestone hills and a strong spring gave this farming town its name and its water, and a German fort of 1896 still stands in the middle of it as the museum. What brings traffic off the highway is a lump of iron lying in a field southwest of town, never moved since it fell because nothing could move it. The same karst underneath holds a cave system with a lake in it that is closed to the public and studied by expedition.

  1. Dragon's Breath Cave

    Landmark · 30 min

    Air rushing out of a narrow opening gave this cave its name, and beneath it lies a body of water that counts as the world's largest known non subglacial underground lake. Explorers reached it in 1986. Entry is restricted to permitted expeditions, so what a visitor sees is the entrance and the surrounding karst.

  2. Hoba Meteorite

    Landmark · 1 hr

    A slab of iron and nickel weighing about sixty tonnes lies where it landed, the largest known meteorite on the planet. A farmer struck it while ploughing in 1920. Cutting and souvenir hunting took pieces off it before it was declared a monument, and a stone amphitheatre has since been built around it.
