A fishing port spread across islands on the outer coast, and the most complete art nouveau town in northern Europe. A fire on the night of 23 January 1904 destroyed the wooden centre and left some 10,000 people homeless, and the rebuilding that followed was done almost entirely in stone and brick in the Jugendstil style then current, giving the town its turrets, spires and stone flowers. It is where the fjords end and the Atlantic begins.
