Things to do in Chucuito

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Chucuito

A lakeside village twenty kilometres south of Puno on the Desaguadero road, once the colonial capital of the province and still holding two large sixteenth century churches. Most visitors stop for Inca Uyo, the walled enclosure of carved stone phalli behind Santo Domingo.

  1. Inca Tunuhuiri

    Inca Tunuhuiri

    Archaeological Site · 30 min

A hilltop site above the lake between Chucuito and Ichu, with an oval enclosure and terracing that predates the Inca occupation of this shore. It is unfenced and rarely visited, and the reason to walk up is the run of the bay towards Puno.

  2. Inca Uyo

    Archaeological Site · 30 min

A walled enclosure beside the plaza filled with rows of carved stone phalli, read as an Inca fertility temple though the arrangement may be a colonial reconstruction. It sits behind the church of Santo Domingo and takes twenty minutes to see properly.

  3. Monasterio Benedictino de la Resurrección

    Monastery · 30 min

A Benedictine house on the lake shore at 3,870 metres, which makes it the highest Catholic monastery in the world, founded by the Belgian monk Simón Pedro Arnold. The church is built in the local idiom with a single nave, and the guesthouse takes visitors on retreat.
