Ninety seconds on Pitumarca

The village on the road to the Rainbow Mountain, three hours south of Cusco, from which the Vinicunca trailhead and the quieter striped hills at Palccoyo are reached. Almost every visitor comes on a day tour that leaves the city at three in the morning.

    The Rainbow Mountain, a striped mineral ridge at 5,036 metres that was under snow until the 2010s, reached by a two-hour walk from a trailhead three hours from Cusco. Go with a day's acclimatisation and leave at 3am.

  2. Palccoyo

    Viewpoint · 3 hr

    Three striped hills and a stone forest at 4,900 metres, the quieter alternative to Vinicunca with an almost flat walk of 40 minutes from the car park. Same colours, a tenth of the people.
