Ninety seconds on Rijeka Crnojevica River Gorge
Boats leave the village dock and run fifteen kilometres of canyon before the lake opens, April to October. The viewpoint over the horseshoe bend is not part of that: it is a roadside stop above the village, reached by car.
A narrow limestone gorge where the Crnojevica river winds toward Lake Skadar between steep wooded walls, best seen by boat from the village jetty or from the Pavlova Strana viewpoint above the horseshoe bend. The village of Rijeka Crnojevica, a short drive northwest of Virpazar, is the starting point.
The river runs fifteen kilometres of canyon between the village and the open lake, and the boats work that stretch: a forty minute run into the canyon at the short end, longer trips carrying on out to the water. Nothing is landed on. Above it, from the road, the river curves below in a wide horseshoe with the hills folding around it and the water seeming to disappear towards the lake basin. That view is the one the place is known for and it is had from a car, which is why doing both in a morning means driving between them.
The river was the road. Everything moving between the lake and the interior came up it, and the port that grew on the bend was the busiest in the country. What is left on the banks in the first stretch is that trade.
