Ninety seconds on the National Museum of Montenegro
Five collections in four separate palaces across a small town, on one ticket, and the history one is shut. Which of the rest earn an afternoon depends on how much the old royal capital is the reason for coming to Cetinje at all.
The one to start in is King Nikola's Palace, finished in 1867, which is a combination of museum exhibitions and recreated rooms and gives the clearest impression of how the country's elite lived in the nineteenth century. The Art Museum in Government House holds the icon known as Our Lady of Philermos. Biljarda, the low fortified house that was the residence of the poet Petar II Petrovic Njegos, now holds the enormous relief map of Montenegro made in 1917, and the Ethnographic Museum faces the palace across the street. Two hours covers two of them properly. The history collection is closed for visiting, so the rest is an afternoon.
