Ninety seconds on Omu Peak
The hut at the top is the highest building in the country and it opens only at weekends in high summer, so the walk has to be planned around whether there will be anything there when it is reached.
The highest point of the Bucegi at 2,514 metres, with a meteorological station and a hut on the summit, reached in five or six hours from the town. Snow lies on the approaches into June.
There are two versions of this walk and the cable car decides which one is being done. From the top station at Babele the summit is two to three hours off across the plateau, following a yellow band over ground that is high but never technical, with the same again to come back. On foot from the valley it is a full day and a serious one, and the shortest of those routes is exposed enough that it is not for everybody. The plateau in between is the character of the thing: broad, bare, and without shelter of any kind, which is why the weather and not the gradient is what turns walkers round.
