Ninety seconds on Flatts Village
Standing on the bridge at the turn of the tide gets the best of it, when the current slackens and eagle rays and turtles pass between sound and sea. The rest is a short walk: two public docks, a few restaurants, the aquarium opposite.
Flatts Bridge carries the main road over the inlet, and the village is read from it: down a channel narrow enough that the water visibly moves. Spotted eagle rays and turtles travel in and out of the sound and are what visitors watch for from up there. The T Docks and the grassy ground across the road from the aquarium give the other two views. Houses that appear in eighteenth century paintings of the village still stand on both banks, several of them former storehouses now carrying house names. Eating runs to an Italian kitchen, a takeaway counter and a pantry with a vegetarian menu. The aquarium is across the inlet and is a visit of its own. Shelly Bay and its beach lie east along the north shore.
