Ninety seconds on Audain Art Museum
Thursday to Monday, from 11am to 6pm. The museum is closed every Tuesday and Wednesday, and the holiday schedule changes the hours around Christmas, so check it before a December visit.
Not for adults: general admission is ticketed. Entry is free for visitors 18 and under, for Indigenous Peoples and for members. Tickets are sold online or at the door, and booking ahead is not required.
In Whistler Village, on Blackcomb Way, between Municipal Day Lots 3 and 4, where parking is paid. The street-level main entrance on Blackcomb Way is step-free, with a short drop-off zone in front.
Most visitors spend one to two hours in the galleries. Allow up to three hours for a slow look at the Permanent Collection, or for a public guided tour on a Friday or a weekend.
Patkau Architects. The building opened in 2016 on a forested site in the Fitzsimmons Creek floodplain, and its design answers the flood risk and Whistler's heavy snowfall.
Whistler's best plan for a day of cloud is in the village: a building among the cedars holding Indigenous masks, the largest permanent display of Emily Carr's paintings and Vancouver photo-conceptualism. Give it one to two hours.
Leave your backpack, umbrella and ski boots in the cloakroom or the lockers first, which are free. None of them is allowed in the galleries, and that includes a backpack of any size.
Start in the Permanent Collection, which moves through carving, painting and photography. Find the Indigenous masks and James Hart's The Dance Screen (The Scream Too), then the Emily Carr paintings. A lift reaches the Upper Galleries, and the Special Exhibitions there change through the year.
For a guide, join a public tour: the building on Fridays at 1pm, the Permanent Collection on weekends at 2pm. When cloud closes the alpine at Whistler Blackcomb, this is the morning to come, from 11am.
