Kochkor Felt Workshops
Women's cooperatives in the town make shyrdak and ala-kiyiz, the cut-and-stitched and rolled felt carpets of Kyrgyz households, and run short demonstrations of the wetting, rolling and dyeing. Sales fund the workshops directly. Kochkor is the usual staging post for Song-Kol trips, so an afternoon here fills the gap before a driver leaves. The shops keep daytime hours.

Lake
Song-Kol
A treeless alpine lake sits at about 3,000 metres on a plateau two hours south of Kochkor, surrounded by summer pasture where herding families pitch yurts from June to September. Guest yurts take overnight visitors, and horse riding and cold, clear nights are the point of coming. The passes in and out hold snow late, and the plateau closes for winter.
