Macedonia Square
Bronze statues, fountains and neoclassical facades fill the main square on the south bank, the centrepiece of a state building programme that reshaped the centre over the past two decades. The mounted warrior at the middle is the tallest thing in the square, and the argument that comes with it is local. Cafes around the edges fill through the evening.

Matka Canyon
A dammed gorge on the Treska half an hour west of the city, walled by cliffs and lined with caves, one of them among the deepest underwater caves in Europe. A path along the water leads to a medieval monastery and a boat landing, and kayaks can be hired at the dam. Weekend queues for the boats are long, so a weekday morning pays.

Memorial House of Mother Teresa
Built on the site of the church where she was baptised, this glass and stone memorial in the city centre holds letters, a sari and a chapel upstairs. She was born in the Ottoman city in 1910 and left at eighteen. The building is small and the visit is short, and it sits on the main pedestrian street.

Millennium Cross
A steel cross on Vodno, visible across the basin and lit at night, reached by a cable car from the midway station at Sredno Vodno. The platform at the base opens onto the whole city and the plain toward Kosovo. The cable car stops in high wind, and the walk up from the city takes a couple of hours.

Old Bazaar
Ottoman lanes climbing north from the Stone Bridge hold mosques, hammams, caravanserais and the gold smiths who still work here, the largest surviving bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul. Cafes serve tea under vines and the mosque courtyards stay cool. Shops close on Sunday and many shut in the afternoon, so mornings and evenings are the hours that work.

Skopje Fortress
Kale sits on a ridge above the river, its walls rebuilt from Roman stone and its grounds excavated down to Neolithic layers. Little stands inside beyond the ramparts, which is what makes the walk around them worth doing, with the bazaar on one side and the new statues on the other. Entry is free, and the ramparts are the reason to climb.

Stone Bridge
Six centuries of traffic have crossed this Ottoman span over the Vardar, rebuilt on Roman foundations and now the hinge between the marble squares of the south bank and the bazaar on the north. The walk takes two minutes and shows both versions of the city at once. Floodlights come on after dark and the parapet fills with strollers.
