Ninety seconds on Ojców National Park
Short to reach from Kraków by car, this park puts you in two limestone valleys of cliffs, caves and forest, with a guided cave tour and a hilltop castle to aim for.
Two limestone valleys, the Prądnik and the Sąspówka, run through Poland's smallest national park. Between them they hold cliffs, ravines and over 400 caves, home to about two thirds of all the bat species found in Poland.
Łokietek's Cave is the largest of them, about 125 m above the floor of the Sąspówka Valley. Look up in the main corridor for the round hollows called vortex boilers, left when the whole passage was full of water.
The corridor is mostly bare of stalactites because they were broken off in the 19th century, when the cave was unprotected and open without restriction. Dark Cave is one of the most valuable archaeological sites in Poland: Neanderthals lived there over a long period.
Out in the open, Hercules' Club is a limestone pillar about 25 m high, shaped like a giant club and one of the park's symbols. The Chapel on the Water stands straight over the river. Pieskowa Skała Castle sits on its own hilltop above the valley.
Arriving by car, you come in at Złota Góra, at Ojców or at Łokietka Street. Car parks charge a fee every day of the year, weekends and holidays included. A small wooden shop by a car park sells walking maps.
The caves are seen only with the duty guide. Tours of Łokietek's Cave leave every 30 minutes with no reservations, and Dark Cave tours go on the hour. Buy each ticket at that cave's own ticket point just before the tour; nothing is sold online.
Dark Cave's ticket office stands on the green trail at the base of Crown Mountain, 400 m before the cave, so sales stop 15 minutes before each tour. To reach Hercules' Club, follow the yellow trail markers through the forest until they bring you out beside the pillar.
The park does not run guided walks itself, and on your own the marked trails and the duty guides in the caves cover the whole visit. Organised groups are different: they may only walk the park with a licensed guide.
Bring cash for the caves and the castle as well as a card. On a sunny weekend the wait for Łokietek's Cave can run to an hour or more, so go there first in the day.
Leave time to walk to Dark Cave after buying your ticket, because the office sits well before the entrance on the trail.
