Ella Rock
Longer and rougher than its neighbour, this walk follows the railway line out of town before turning up through tea and eucalyptus to a cliff edge above the valley. Route finding is the catch, since junctions are unmarked and locals offer to guide walkers part way. Allow half a morning, with water and shoes that grip.

Lipton's Seat
From a lookout above the Dambatenne estate, the tea planter Thomas Lipton surveyed his holdings, and the view on a clear morning runs across ridges of tea toward the southern plains. Cloud usually closes in by mid morning, so the drive or walk up from Haputale starts in the dark. The estate factory below runs tours on weekday mornings.

Little Adam's Peak
A gentle climb through tea bushes reaches a green ridge with three small summits and a view into the Ella Gap, and it takes under an hour from the road. Paths are clear and the gradient is easy, which makes it the sunrise walk for guests who want the light without the effort of Ella Rock.

Nine Arch Bridge
Built of stone and brick without steel, reportedly because the First World War cut supplies, the viaduct curves through jungle between Ella and Demodara on nine arches. Trains cross a handful of times a day, and the schedule posted at the cafes above is the thing to check. Walking the track is common and the drop is unfenced.

Ravana Falls
Water drops in a broad fan beside the road to Wellawaya, loud in the wet months and thin by the end of the dry season, with a cave in the cliff above tied to the Ramayana story of a captured princess. Roadside parking, stalls and monkeys come with it. Rocks at the base are slippery and the pools are dangerous after rain.
