Things to do in Fort Portal

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Fort Portal

Set on a ridge in western Uganda's crater lake country, this small highland town looks across tea estates towards the Rwenzori range. It serves as the base for the chimpanzees of Kibale, for Queen Elizabeth National Park and for the volcanic lakes scattered through the surrounding hills. Road transfers from Kampala take most of a day, and domestic flights reach Kasese to the south. Dry months from June to August and December to February give firmer forest trails. Chimpanzee permits are booked well in advance.

Things to do

6
  1. Amabere Caves

    Other · 1.5 hr

Behind a curtain of falling water, stalactites drip from a rock overhang that Batoro tradition ties to Nyinamwiru, a princess of local legend. A guide walks visitors down to the cave and on to nearby crater viewpoints. The route is short and steep in places, and the rock stays slippery through the year.

  2. Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

    Park · 3 hr

Run by the community beside Kibale, a boardwalk and swamp path lead through papyrus and figs where eight primate species and more than two hundred bird species have been recorded. Guided walks last about three hours and the fees support local schools. Early morning brings the best birding, and gumboots are usually available at the office.

  3. Crater Lakes

    Lake · 3 hr

Dozens of volcanic craters pit the hills around Fort Portal, many filled with still green water and ringed by tea and banana smallholdings. Lake Nyinambuga appears on a Ugandan banknote. Walking or cycling between the viewpoints fills a half day, and most lodges hand out simple route maps.

  4. Kibale National Park

    Park · 5 hr

Moist tropical forest north of the crater lakes holds one of Africa's densest primate populations, including habituated chimpanzee groups tracked on morning and afternoon walks. Thirteen primate species live here alongside forest elephants. Permits are limited and sell out in high season, so booking ahead matters. Trails turn slick after rain, and closed shoes help.

  5. Queen Elizabeth National Park

    Park · 10 hr

Savannah, crater fields and the Kazinga Channel spread across the rift floor south of the Rwenzoris, where boat cruises pass hippo pods and elephant herds on the bank. The Ishasha sector is known for lions that rest in fig trees. Game drives run at dawn, and midday heat empties the plains.

  6. Rwenzori Mountains National Park

    Park · 48 hr

Glaciers survive on the equator here, above a climb that passes through bamboo, heather and the giant lobelia of the Afro alpine zone. Margherita Peak takes a week or more on the central circuit, with huts along the way. Weather is wet in most months, and the trek demands guides, porters and real hill fitness.
