Ninety seconds on Brick Lane
As of October 2026, the street market trades on Sundays from 10am to 3pm. Inside the Truman Brewery, the Upmarket runs later on a Sunday, until 6pm, so the indoor stalls are still open after the road has cleared.
The road stalls are a Sunday market only. On Saturdays the Upmarket inside the Truman Brewery opens from 11am to 5.30pm, so there is still indoor vintage and craft shopping at the north end.
It begins at Swanfield Street in Bethnal Green in the north and crosses Bethnal Green Road on the way south. At the southern end, a short extension called Osborn Street connects it to Whitechapel High Street.
A former brewery site at 91 Brick Lane, now given over to workspace, markets, events, shops and restaurants. Its F-Block houses the Upmarket, the indoor market for vintage clothing and handmade goods.
The Brick Lane Jamme Masjid, a mosque. The building went up in 1743 as a Protestant chapel, later served as a Methodist chapel and then a synagogue, and has been a mosque since 1976. It is Grade II* listed.
Best on a Sunday, when stalls fill the road and the old Truman Brewery opens its indoor vintage market. The curry houses and the mosque on the Fournier Street corner lie further down.
Brick Lane runs from Swanfield Street in Bethnal Green, across Bethnal Green Road, down to Osborn Street and Whitechapel High Street. It lies in the borough of Tower Hamlets. The markets sit at the northern end and the curry houses line the southern stretch.
The Truman Brewery at number 91 was once London's largest brewery. Its Upmarket fills the F-Block, entered from Brick Lane or from Ely's Yard off Hanbury Street, and sells vintage clothing, handmade accessories, illustrations and crafts.
On Sundays the street market spreads into the road itself. Further south, the mosque at 59 Brick Lane stands on the corner of Fournier Street, a working place of worship with daily prayers.
Start at the north end and walk south, so the brewery markets come first. Go into the Upmarket in F-Block, then come back out to the stalls in the road.
Keep heading south past the curry houses to the Fournier Street corner, and look at the mosque from the pavement opposite. The lane ends at Osborn Street.
Pair it with Spitalfields for the second half of a Sunday, or with Shoreditch.
On a Saturday the road has no stalls, but the Upmarket is open from late morning, so the walk still starts indoors.
The road stalls pack up well before the indoor market, so do the street first and the Upmarket after.
On Fridays the mosque seats around 3,000 worshippers for Jumu'ah prayer. Photograph it from across the road and keep the doorway clear.
