Beginners

Is Cortina good for beginners?

Yes. Start on the wide, gentle runs at Socrepes or Pocol on the Tofana side, where ski schools have offices at the base. Faloria's runs are mostly red and black, so leave them until you are confident.

When

When is the best time to ski Cortina?

January, after New Year, before the February high season fills the slopes.

Getting round

Are Cortina's ski areas connected?

Partly. The Skyline gondola joins the Tofana to the 5 Torri, but Faloria and Cristallo sit across the valley. A ski bus, free with a lift pass, runs between the town and the bases.

The three mountains share a pass but few lifts, so spend each day on one. Learn at Socrepes or Pocol, and save the Tofana for its steep World Cup runs.

Three mountains, one pass

The Tofana, Faloria with Cristallo, and the 5 Torri with Lagazuoi sit on different sides of the valley, each with its own base.

Tofana

Higher up are the Olimpia delle Tofane and the other race runs, reached on chairs from Socrepes or on the cable cars from town to Ra Valles.

Faloria and Cristallo

The Faloria cable car leaves from the centre of town, so no bus is needed. The runs here are mostly red and black, Canalone Franchetti among them; Cristallo's chairs start at Rio Gere.

5 Torri and Lagazuoi

Gentle runs round the 5 Torri and the Falzarego Pass, where Col Gallina suits children. The Lagazuoi cable car leads to the Armentarola and on to Alta Badia.

What makes it special

Pale Dolomite walls ring the town on every side, and the runs come down between them.

The women's World Cup races on the Olimpia delle Tofane every January.

From the top of the Lagazuoi cable car, the Armentarola runs down a quiet valley into Alta Badia, past frozen waterfalls.

The lifts open in early December. The Tofana lifts close in mid-April, and the Faloria cable car and the Col Gallina chair run into early May.

Before you go

Fly in
Venice Marco Polo, or Innsbruck over the border.
By transfer
About two hours from Venice airport by road.
By train
To Calalzo, the nearest station, then an hour by bus.
Between areas
The ski bus is free with a lift pass.

Watch for

  • Car parks at the bases fill early, so arrive when the lifts open.
  • Wind and heavy snow can shut the Lagazuoi cable car and the 5 Torri chair. Keep a Tofana or Faloria day in hand.
  • The Armentarola usually opens just after Christmas, and its horse tow and the taxi bus back to the Falzarego Pass are paid in cash, outside the pass.
