Low cloud decides this walk, not rain or a grey sky. High overcast still leaves the towers in plain view, so read the low-cloud forecast the night before and hold a spare day for it.
Allow about four hours for the climb. It comes in three unlike stretches: open slopes where the wind has a clear run at you, a sheltered forest of southern beech beside the river, and the moraine. Budget half an hour to an hour at the lake, which is exposed and colder than the forest below it, and in winter frozen over. The descent is where knees and tired legs suffer, and poles earn their weight there.
