Ninety seconds on Genghis Khan Statue Complex
Stand on the platform on the horse's head, at the top of a steel statue of Genghis Khan, and the Mongolian steppe lies below you in a panoramic view.
The rider faces east, toward the Khentii Mountains where Genghis Khan was born. By legend, the statue stands on the spot where he found a golden whip that inspired his later conquests.
Horse and rider together are made from 250 tonnes of stainless steel. Thirty-six columns hold up the round visitor centre beneath them, and by tradition they stand for 36 great khans, the kings of the Mongols.
Walk into the visitor centre and the sight that greets you is a gutal, the traditional Mongolian leather boot, made at giant scale. The museum's archaeological displays run from the Bronze Age to the Mongol Empire, and traditional clothing is on show as well.
From the visitor centre at the foot of the statue, a small lift at the horse's back takes you up to the exhibition hall inside the horse.
A few flights of stairs then climb up through the neck to a door, and the platform on the horse's head lies beyond it. The lift covers only the first part of the way, so be ready for the stairs.
If you would rather not use the lift at all, you can climb on foot from the bottom, up through the body of the horse.
