Ninety seconds on Perast Museum (Bujović Palace)
The balcony over the water gets as much attention as the cases, and this is the one palace in Perast open as a museum rather than as a hotel. Shut every Monday and all through January.
Baroque palace of 1694 on the waterfront, now the town museum with maritime portraits, weapons, flags and captains' possessions from Perast's era as a Venetian naval town.
A portico of five rusticated arches opens off the quay with a first floor terrace behind it, and the terrace looks straight out at the two islets, so the visit tends to stall there before it starts. Inside are the town's naval centuries: nautical charts and instruments, captains' logbooks of the seventeenth and eighteenth, portraits, uniforms, weapons and documents. The palace was built for Vicko Bujovic, a captain who led Perast's men in the Morean War, and the building carries as much of the argument as the collection does.
