Skageflå

Historic Farm  ·  Geiranger, Norway 62.1102°N   7.1211°E
VisitAbout 3 hours CostFree to visit

A mountain farm on a shelf 250 metres above the south side of the Geirangerfjord, worked until 1918, with the Seven Sisters falling on the wall opposite. Children on the farm were reportedly roped to the rock so they could not go over the edge, and the family rowed to church. Sightseeing boats drop walkers at Skagehola for a steep climb up to it, or it can be reached on foot from Homlong in about two hours.

The verdict

Most walkers take the boat drop and climb straight up, then continue out to Homlong rather than wait for a pickup; the exposed sections are stepped and railed but not for the nervous.

From the dispatch
North from the Sognefjord, a long bus day, is the Geirangerfjord, the one on the brochures, and in July the most crowded water in fjord Norway. Sleep in Geiranger, pack the night before, and haul the bags onto the car deck of the first morning ferry toward Hellesylt; it runs the fjord's whole length before the sightseeing traffic starts, and the empty water is worth the graceless start. The Seven Sisters drop in a thin white row down the north wall; across the water the abandoned farm at Skageflå holds its shelf 250 metres up, reached once by ladders the family is said to have hauled up when the tax collector was due, and reached today by boat drop-off and a steep climb.
