Ninety seconds on Boka Falls
Boka Falls has a small car park about 5 km from the centre of Bovec, around five minutes by car. The drive from Ljubljana takes about two and a half hours. Without a car, the nearest bus stops are Log Čezsoški and Žviker, and Log Čezsoški is the closer of the two.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons to see Boka Falls. In both, melting snow and larger quantities of rain in the Kanin mountains bring the fall to full strength.
No. Swimming at Boka Falls is unsafe. The fall is seen instead from a viewpoint at the end of a short, well-marked path that starts across from the car park.
From the panoramic viewpoint at the top of a short marked path, you see the whole of Boka in one frame, top to bottom.
Boka Falls is large enough to be seen from the road, before any walk starts. It drops down an almost vertical limestone wall in two steps, 144 metres in all and 18 metres wide.
The water comes out of a karst spring under the wall. That spring is fed by water that collects high in the Kanin mountain chain. Pair it with Great Soča Gorge or Virje Waterfall.
The size of the fall swings widely as a result. At its peak the spring delivers 100 cubic metres of water a second, and at its lowest about 2.
Late summer is the driest stretch of the year, and the fall runs thinnest then. Heavy rain at any time of year lifts the flow again.
Across from the car park is the bridge over the Boka. The well-marked path to the panoramic viewpoint starts on the right side of it and climbs steadily on an incline.
At the viewpoint, stop and look before going any further. A path carries on beyond it, but that stretch is very steep and precipitous in places and is walked at your own risk. Treat the viewpoint as the end of the visit.
Come back down the same way, and take it slowly. The ground is tricky and slippery in places, and the descent is where it catches walkers out.
The car park sits just before the road crosses the river. If you find yourself driving over the bridge, you have missed it: turn round and come back.
It is small, with room for about 20 to 25 cars, and fills up in the summer months.
