Boka Falls
Fed from a karst spring high on the Kanin massif, the fall drops more than 100 metres down a cliff west of Bovec, visible from the road bridge near Žaga. A steep path climbs to a closer viewpoint in about half an hour. It runs hardest in spring snowmelt and after heavy rain, and can shrink to a thread in a dry late summer.

Great Soča Gorge
Upstream of Bovec, near the village of Soča, the river squeezes through a slot of white rock only a few metres wide, with deep green pools between the boulders. A footbridge over the narrowest point gives the classic view, and paths follow the rim in both directions. Parking by the road is limited in July and August, so mornings are calmer.

Kanin
A cable car rises from the edge of Bovec towards the high karst plateau of Mount Kanin, a ski area in winter and a hiking and via ferrata ground in summer. Above the treeline the bare white limestone stretches across the Italian border. Operating days vary by season and weather, so check the timetable before planning a day around it.

Kluže Fortress
Guarding the narrow Koritnica gorge on the road to the Predil Pass, the stone fort sits a few kilometres north of Bovec, reached across a bridge over a drop of some 70 metres. Its rooms hold a small museum and exhibitions in the summer season. A path climbs through the woods to the ruined upper fort, Hermann, used on the Isonzo Front.

Mangart Saddle Road
From Log pod Mangartom a tolled road climbs through hairpins and unlit rock tunnels to the Mangart saddle at 2,055 metres, the highest road in the country. It is narrow, single track in places, and open only in the snow-free months, roughly early summer to autumn. At the top, a short walk leads to views over the Julian Alps and into Italy.

Soča
Glacial melt and limestone give the river its green and turquoise colour, bright enough to look dyed in summer sun. Rafting, kayaking and canyoning outfitters in Bovec run trips from spring to autumn, and the Soča Trail follows the bank upstream towards the source in Trenta. The water stays cold even in August, so outfitters supply wetsuits for every trip.

Virje Waterfall
A short walk from the village of Plužna, a few kilometres west of Bovec, ends at a curtain of water falling into a round emerald pool edged by moss. The drop is modest, and the colour of the pool is the reason to come. Parking is small and the path easy, which makes it a good stop between rafting trips.
