Sunny red runs above St. Moritz, up to Piz Nair
Be on the first lift up at 7.45 and you get freshly groomed pistes in the morning sun before the lifts fill. Come in mid-January, when the slopes are quieter.
Map data: OpenStreetMap.
The mountain faces south over St. Moritz, so the runs stay bright through the short winter days. Ride the cable car to Piz Nair, the highest point, for the view over the valley.
A funicular climbs from the middle of St. Moritz Dorf through Chantarella to Corviglia, so there is no bus or drive to the first lift.
Most of the day is cruising: long, wide pistes link every sector, from Marguns across to Signal. Learners have their own gentle areas at Salastrains and Marguns.
Book a table for lunch. The huts and terraces are part of the day, from the Alpina, the oldest hut on the mountain, to the summit restaurant on Piz Nair.
On a slow afternoon, ride the timed giant slalom course. Cameras film your run, and you can download it online afterwards.
Pick your base by its lift. Stay in the Dorf, the village centre, for the funicular, or in Celerina for the gondola to Marguns. The Bad district has the cable car to Signal.
The lifts open in late November and close in early or mid-April. Christmas, New Year and mid-February are the busy weeks, and mid-January is the quiet stretch between them.
