Six linked resorts on one pass, topped by Mont Fort
The novice areas are small and away from the main lifts. Start on the free carpets at Les Esserts and Les Moulins, then move to La Chaux or Savoleyres once you can turn.
Avoid February if you can: the school holidays make it the busiest month, and Christmas and New Year are busy too. In March the days are warmer and the snow softens by the afternoon.
The 4 Vallées pass, if you want Mont Fort or the runs over to Nendaz and Thyon: the local passes do not reach Mont Fort.
Only on the seven marked freeride routes, shown as yellow lines on the piste map. They are marked and patrolled, but ungroomed and not risk-free. For the Backside of Mont Fort, or anything else off the routes, hire a guide.
In January the slopes are quiet and the cold keeps the snow good. Buy the 4 Vallées pass online at least ten days ahead; only that one takes you up Mont Fort.
Map data: OpenStreetMap.
One pass links six resorts, from Bruson across the valley to Thyon at the far end, and a strong skier can cross the whole area in a day.
The Mont Fort cable car reaches the top of the area, and from its platform you see the Matterhorn, the Grand Combin and Mont Blanc.
The steep north face of the Bec des Rosses, in view from Col des Gentianes, hosts the final of the Freeride World Tour.
Be at Médran for the first lifts, when queues are shortest, and ride up to Les Ruinettes and La Chaux.
Intermediates have plenty above Verbier. To reach Nendaz and Thyon you need to be confident on red runs. The run down to Tortin from Chassoure is a wall, a steep mogul field, so check the map before you commit.
Stay near Médran or Place Centrale if lessons and lift access matter most. Stay in Le Châble for lower rates: the gondola up runs late, so dinner in Verbier still works.
The lifts open in early November and run to the end of April. The full 4 Vallées pass covers mid-December to mid-April.

Where to base yourself, and two days off the skis
