How each one works

Polarsteps is a live travel tracker. Switch it on at the start of a trip and it draws your route on a world map as you move, while you add steps with photos and a few lines about each stop. Friends and family can follow the trip as it happens, and at the end you can order the whole thing as a printed Travel Book.

Meridian Dispatch works from your camera instead. Nothing runs in the background and it never tracks you, but each time you open it during a trip, your newest photos land on the right days and each day is written up in real prose, every place named. The morning after the trip ends, it becomes a finished journal laid out like a magazine. The first time you open the app, it also finds the trips abroad already in your camera roll.

Both give you the trip as it happens. The difference is who sees it and who does the work. Polarsteps shares your route with followers in real time, and the photos and stories come from the steps you add. Meridian Dispatch writes each day for you from your photos, and only you see it.

Location and privacy

Polarsteps tracks your route in the background, which is what makes the live map work, and its App Store listing carries Apple's warning that it may use your location when the app is not open. It says it does not show ads or sell your data, its label lists no data used to track you, and you can set any trip to only you. Your trips, photos and route still live on its servers, tied to your account.

Meridian Dispatch never asks for location access, and nothing runs in the background while you travel. Trip detection and photo ranking happen on your iPhone and your photos are never uploaded; to name places and write each day, the app sends place names and approximate locations, never images. If a live record of where you are is exactly what you do not want, that settles it.
