The route or the whole trip
Roadtrippers starts with a route. You set a start and an end, then add stops along the way, from roadside attractions to national parks, and the app works out the drive. Its Autopilot feature will draft the whole trip for you from your vehicle, your interests and your budget level. When you set off, you navigate from the app or through CarPlay.
Meridian Dispatch starts with the plan you already have. Ask ChatGPT, Claude or any chatbot for the trip and tap the link it writes, or forward your hotel, flight and car-rental confirmations, or build the days yourself. With the Meridian Dispatch connector, Claude, ChatGPT or Grok can create and edit the plan in the app as you talk.
Then the two jobs separate. Roadtrippers stays with you on the road. Meridian Dispatch steps back while you drive, and each time you open it, your newest photos land on the right days and each day is written up, every place named. The morning after the trip ends, it is a finished journal.
A road trip at home or abroad
Coverage settles most of this. Roadtrippers' App Store listing describes it as a road trip app for the USA and Canada, and its about page says its places also cover New Zealand and Australia. If you are driving across the United States or Canada, it is the more useful app.
Meridian Dispatch covers trips abroad and leaves domestic trips out on purpose. If you are flying somewhere to drive it, the website has road-trip itineraries you can add to your plan, such as the North Coast 500 in Scotland, alongside the rest of the itineraries. You will still want a navigation app for the road itself.
What you have when you get home
Roadtrippers keeps your saved trips and favourite places, synced across devices. Its own pages do not describe a journal or a way to look back on the drive.
That is where Meridian Dispatch does most of its work. It groups each day's photos into the places you stopped, picks the strongest shots, sets near-duplicates aside and writes the day in prose you can edit line by line. You can export the trip as a print-ready PDF laid out like a magazine, or a short vertical video made on your phone.
It never asks for location access and nothing runs in the background. Your photos stay on your iPhone. To name places and write each day, the app sends our server the location of each group of photos, never the photos themselves.
Free stops and paid tiers
Roadtrippers lets you start a trip with up to three stops, and its paid tiers are listed on the App Store. Premium raises the limit to 150 stops per trip and adds RV-friendly navigation, offline maps and trip collaboration.
Meridian Dispatch is free for the last five years of your trips and one trip in planning. Membership, $19.99 a year, opens every trip from any year and as many plans as you like. There is no monthly plan, and you can cancel anytime from your App Store settings.
