Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Skaftafell

Time needed1.5 hours CostFree

Birch woodland, outwash desert and two glacier tongues sit inside a single afternoon of walking.

A wooded moraine bench between the Skeiðarársandur outwash plain and the Vatnajökull ice cap. It was a national park in its own right from 1967 until it was folded into Vatnajökull National Park in 2008. Trails climb from the visitor centre to Svartifoss.

Know before you goHvannadalshnúkur, at 2,110 metres the highest point in Iceland, stands above the park in the Öræfajökull crater rim. It is a full mountaineering objective on rope, not an extension of the day trails. Bæjarstaðarskógur, the birch wood beyond the river, holds some of the tallest native birch in the country.
