Three churches stand on one square at the far end, one of them out on the point itself. The lanes are empty before eight and the loop takes about ninety minutes, so it fits either side of a beach day.

A walled medieval quarter of Venetian-era stone streets containing the Church of St. John, the Church of Santa Maria in Punta (founded 840), and the Citadela fortress at its seaward tip. It was rebuilt after the 1979 earthquake using original stone.

What you do here

The walk in passes the burial ground and comes through the land gate into a run of narrow alleys linking small squares. The seaward end is where the substance is: one square holding three churches at once. St John the Baptist carries a bell tower of thirty six metres and the Madonna of Budva inside it. Holy Trinity beside it is the Orthodox one, blue and gold under its murals. Santa Maria in Punta is the small one out on the point, among the oldest religious buildings in the Mediterranean. The citadel closes the end of the square and is a separate ticket, as is the walk along the walls. Ninety minutes covers the circuit.

Know before you goThe necropolis outside the land gate, by the Hotel Avala forecourt, is a fifth century BC burial ground of nearly five hundred graves, and the walk in from that side goes straight past it.
