Ninety seconds on Lake Bled
Row yourself out to the island, swim off the west shore and walk the path around the lake. Do all three early or late in the day, before the tour groups arrive or after they leave.
Start the walk in the town centre and follow the shore under the castle rock towards Velika Zaka, at the west end. Allow about two hours, because you will stop often for photographs and a swim.
To get on the water yourself, hire a wooden rowing boat on the shore. Along with the pletnas and the line boat, it is one of the few craft allowed to tie up at the island, so you can climb to the church and row back when you choose. Boats are hired by the hour, and rowing is harder than it looks, so book more time than you expect.
For a swim with lockers, slides and changing rooms, pay for the Castle Bathing Area, the lido below the rock. The bays at Mala and Velika Zaka cost nothing; go early, when the lake is calm.
