Where is it

Where is Main Square in Maribor?

Main Square, Glavni trg, is the main square of Maribor's old town, at the address Glavni trg, 2000 Maribor. The historic Lent district lies close by along the Drava River, and Maribor Castle is nearby.

From the river

How far is Main Square from the Drava in Maribor?

About five minutes on foot. Glavni trg is a short walk from the Drava River and the Old Bridge, and most attractions in the city centre are within walking distance, so the square, the riverside and Lent fit into one walk.

Guided tours

Are there guided tours of Maribor old town?

Yes. Lent, the historic district along the Drava, can be explored with a local guide, and themed city tours that include the Old Vine House are also run. Main Square itself is an open public space that can be walked without a guide.

Lent festival

Is the Lent festival held on Main Square in Maribor?

Yes. The Lent festival brings around 700 events over nine days, spread across the banks of the Drava, Glavni trg and City Park, so the main square is one of its stages.

Look up as well as round: above the six marble saints of the plague column, a gilded Mary crowned with twelve stars stands on the moon.

What makes it special

Three things hold the square together: its façades, the Town Hall and the Plague Column. For centuries this was Maribor's main marketplace, where farmers and craftspeople traded their goods.

Historic façades now stand alongside cafés and shops, and the square remains a gathering place and a key stop in the old town.

The Town Hall, the Rotovž, is the square's chief landmark. Its Renaissance front carries one unusual feature, a Baroque tower set off-centre on the façade.

In the middle stands the Plague Column, made entirely of white marble. Sculptor Jožef Straub made it in the 18th century to give thanks for the end of the plague, replacing a first column with a figure of Mary, raised in 1681.

Visiting

Begin at the Plague Column, then cross to the Town Hall and walk the edge of the square past the old fronts.

From there, head down to the Lent district along the river.

On the way stands the Old Vine House, and in front of it grows a Žametovka vine, also called Modra kavčina, more than 450 years old. It is recognised as the oldest vine in the world still bearing grapes. If time allows, step inside the house.

Finish with a short walk along the riverbank. Pohorje makes a good second stop.
