Lent
Along the left bank of the Drava, the old river quarter strings together the Judgement Tower, the Water Tower and the square where the Old Vine grows. Cafés spill onto the embankment in summer, and the Lent Festival fills the stages here for about two weeks from late June. Evening is the best time to walk it, when the terraces fill.

Maribor Castle
Built as a fortress on the northeast corner of the old walls, the castle now houses the Maribor Regional Museum. Its rooms trace Styrian life through costume, furniture, guild signs and paintings, and the Rococo staircase and the Knights' Hall are the architectural highlights. An hour covers the main floors comfortably, and it sits right on the main square, Grajski trg.

Maribor Cathedral
Climbing the bell tower is the reason to step inside: the stair ends at a gallery with a clear view over the red roofs, the Drava and the vineyards beyond. The church below mixes a Gothic presbytery with later Baroque furnishings. The tower keeps shorter hours than the nave, so check the day's opening times before planning around the view.

Maribor Synagogue
Medieval stone walls just above the river mark one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Europe, used as a church and a warehouse for centuries after the Jewish community was expelled in the late 1400s. Restored, it now runs as a centre for Jewish cultural heritage with exhibitions and concerts. A short visit fits easily into a walk through Lent.

Old Vine House
A single vine trained along the front of a house on the Lent riverbank is still harvested every autumn, and it is widely recorded as the oldest vine in the world still bearing fruit, at over 400 years. Inside, the house runs as a small museum and tasting room for Styrian wines. Come for a guided tasting; the vine itself can be seen from the street at any hour.

Pohorje
Spruce forest, peat bogs and waterfalls cover this long granite massif directly south of the city. The gondola from the lower station lifts walkers, mountain bikers and, in winter, skiers onto the upper slopes in minutes. Marked trails lead on to the Šumik waterfall and the Lovrenc lakes. Summer and autumn suit hiking; the bike park runs from spring.
