Ninety seconds on Ptuj Castle
As of October 2026, the museum in Ptuj Castle opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10.00 to 18.00 from 15 April to 15 October and 10.00 to 16.00 from 16 October to 14 April, and on Mondays too in July and August. It closes on 1 January, 1 November, 25 December and Easter, and opens only 10.00 to 13.00 on 24 and 31 December and Shrove Tuesday.
Yes. The lower castle courtyard stays open later than the museum: until 19.00 in winter, until 20.00 from 15 April to 30 June and from 1 September to 15 October, and until 21.00 in July and August.
Yes. Ptuj Castle is ticketed, with reduced tickets for pensioners, young visitors and families, and free entry for preschool children. On a short list of set days, Shrove Tuesday and the summer museum night among them, entry is free for every individual visitor.
Ptuj Castle stands at Na Gradu 1. Walkers follow signs from Slovenski trg, the central square, into Grajska ulica, a tight passage that climbs to the castle and opens views over the town as it rises. In winter its cobblestones can freeze and turn dangerously slippery.
Ptuj's castle keeps the largest collection of historical musical instruments in Slovenia, and the Kurent carnival masks of the region besides. Give the collections their time, then step out to the viewing terrace for the town below.
The castle holds the most visited collections of the Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum. On the ground floor stand the musical instruments that wealthy Ptuj noblemen and citizens once played, while the arms collection and furnished noble rooms fill other parts of the building.
The Shrovetide collection of the Ptuj region, Kurent included, has a permanent home in the renovated castle stables. The castle gallery hangs Gothic and Baroque art, glass paintings have a collection of their own, and the Festival Hall holds Turkish-style paintings.
Outside, statues stand in the central courtyard and a terrace looks out over the town. Building began under Archbishop Konrad of Salzburg in the first half of the 12th century, and his residence still stands as the Leslies' wing.
Begin in the open air, then go inside. Start on the ground floor with the music collection, then move on to the arms and the furnished rooms.
Finish with the art. The gallery and the glass paintings make a quieter stretch after the weapons, and the stables come last.
To go round with a guide, book a tour in Slovenian, English or German by phone at least three days ahead; otherwise go at your own pace. If the museum does not appeal, the open-air parts make a visit on their own.
