Go inside the church as well as walking up to the view of it: you find a gilded altar among 18th-century Baroque furnishings and a choir vault painted by a Ladin artist.

What makes it special

The bell tower survives from the first church, recorded in 1394. The nave beside it is a late Gothic hall, and once inside you can look up at its net vault, whose ribs are laid out asymmetrically.

The furnishings are 18th-century Baroque. Among them stands a gilded altar, and the choir vault carries paintings from 1928 by the Ladin artist Johann M. Pescoller.

Legend says the church was built where a small statue of St Mary Magdalene washed up after a storm. Look for that miraculous image, which is still kept in the church.

Outside, the sexton's house, the old school building and the Obermesnerhof farm stand around the church on its hill, and together they make one small group of buildings.

Visiting

Start in the centre of the village and take Kirchweg uphill past the Fallerhof farm to the church. Go inside before walking on to the viewpoint.

Back outside, follow Magdalenaweg north and cross the bridge over the Blauer Bach. Look for the Panoramaweg sign on the right and turn onto it.

The path climbs for 10 to 15 minutes past a farmhouse to a bench on the Bergbauernweg. From there the church stands below you with the Odle behind. Walk back down to the village the same way.

Tips

Bring a zoom lens if you want the church to fill the frame. On a hot day carry plenty of water, a sun hat and sunscreen.

At sunset, stay on after the last light leaves the tallest peaks. Most of the crowd heads down at that moment, and the Odle then catch the afterglow.

As of October 2026 the parish lists Mass in the church on the third Saturday of each month, at 7.30pm from June to August and at 4pm from September to May.

Know before you goAs of October 2026 the road up to the church is gated and open only to residents' cars, so the viewpoint is reached on foot.Farmers along the path have put up signs asking walkers to keep to it, so stay off the meadow grass on the way up. Drones are banned in this area.Inside the church, photography is often forbidden out of respect for the place.
