Ninety seconds on National Art Museum of Montenegro
Our Lady of Philermos is kept here, an icon that reached Cetinje from Rhodes by way of Malta, Saint Petersburg and Belgrade, and it is the reason to choose this collection if only one is getting an hour.
Cetinje holds the national art collection in Government House, alongside the history museum. It spans medieval religious art, 19th-century Montenegrin painters and contemporary work, and its best known object is the icon of Our Lady of Philermos.
Philermos is what this collection is visited for. The icon was on Rhodes with the Knights Hospitaller, who took it when they took the island, and it left Malta with them when Bonaparte occupied it in 1798. It spent the next century as the Tsar's, in the Winter Palace until 1917, and then moved with the exiled imperial family to Copenhagen and on to Belgrade. It disappeared from there in the bombing of 1941, and where it had gone was not established for another half century. Around it the collection runs medieval religious painting, the nineteenth century Montenegrin painters, and a contemporary wing built on the Dado Duric gallery.
