The arm of the Sognefjord that runs 29 kilometres inland to end at Flåm, deep enough in places to swallow a mountain and narrow enough that a kayak feels like the right scale for it. Guided paddles leave from the Flåm waterfront and work the shoreline north towards Aurland, close in under cliffs where waterfalls come straight off the rock. Most trips are three hours or so and take beginners, since the water inside the fjord is usually flat.

The verdict

At water level the scale finally reads; guided paddles push off from the shingle beach beside Flåm station, and the morning slots get flat water before the ferries and the afternoon wind.

From the dispatch
A kayak sits a hand's breadth above the surface, and from a hull barely hip-wide the cliffs go from large to impossible; on a still morning the black water doubles them. Book a guided half-day on the Aurlandsfjord out of Flåm and take the earliest start offered, because the wind arrives after lunch and the first hours are the calm ones. Keep a paddle's length off the rock.
