Things to do in Flåm

A village of a few hundred people at the head of the Aurlandsfjord, the innermost arm of the Sognefjord, reached by the Flåm Railway dropping 866 metres from the mountain junction at Myrdal. Its harbour is the transfer point for the whole car-free crossing of western Norway, with fjord boats leaving for Gudvangen through the Nærøyfjord next door. The scale is deceptive: the village is tiny, the walls above it run to well over a thousand metres.

  1. Aurlandsfjord

    Kayaking · 3 hr

At water level the scale finally reads; guided paddles push off from the shingle beach beside Flåm station, and the morning slots get flat water before the ferries and the afternoon wind.

  2. Flåm Railway

    Scenic Railway · 2 hr

Runs all year and takes about an hour each way, with a short photo stop at Kjosfossen; seats go early through the cruise season, so book the round trip before arriving in Flåm.

  3. Nærøyfjord

    Natural Wonder · 2 hr

The narrow arm only gives itself up from the water; boats work out of both Gudvangen and Flåm, and the quiet electric sailings are worth choosing over the open-deck scrum.
