Ninety seconds on Škocjan Caves
The complete Škocjan Caves route takes 2.5 to 3 hours on foot. A guide leads the group through the caves, and visitors then cover the final open-air section on their own.
No. Photography is not allowed inside the cave, so cameras stay packed away for the whole indoor section of the guided tour, from the first tunnel onward.
Škocjan Caves are about 4 km on foot from Divača railway station, along a well-marked path, and a map at the station shows the way. By car from Ljubljana, the route follows the signs for Koper and turns left towards Škocjan just after Divača.
Yes, apart from two days a year. Škocjan Caves are closed to visitors on 1 January and 25 December, and guided tours run on all other days.
It is advised. The main cave tour is ticketed, and buying online in advance is the recommended route. Organised groups must register their visit at least 14 days ahead.
Warm layers and non-slip shoes, with enough water for a walk of several hours over steps and paths. Bring all three in summer too, since the temperature inside does not follow the weather outside.
Inside these caves a guide leads you across the Reka river on the Cerkvenik bridge. Come between May and September, when the walk runs its full length.
The Reka river disappears into the ground at Škocjan and flows on underground for 34 kilometres. The caves it passes through have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, listed as both natural and cultural heritage.
The walk meets two caves in turn. First comes the Silent Cave (Tiha jama), entered through an artificial tunnel. The river only appears in the second, the Murmuring Cave.
There the Cerkvenik bridge carries the path across, above the river bed. Beyond the caves, the route comes up into daylight in Velika dolina, the Big Collapse Doline.
The air in the caves stays at 12°C, which feels cool even on a hot summer day.
Tours start at the park's reception centre, where guides meet the group and lead it on foot to the cave. Inside, the route passes through the Silent Cave and then the Murmuring Cave, crossing the river by the bridge.
Out in daylight, the guides leave the group. From there you continue independently along the doline, at your own pace, to the end of the walk.
In the other months the visit ends sooner, at Exit 1 in Velika dolina, rather than running the full route. Pair it with Lipica Stud Farm.
Park guides lead the main cave route, so the choice here is which tour rather than whether to take one. The Hanke Channel tour is a separate guided visit that takes half a day.
It runs only on a confirmed booking made at least 10 days ahead, and children under 15 cannot join. Without a guide, the park's educational trail is open all year.
