Ninety seconds on Rhine Falls
Two banks, and they are not the same outing. The Dachsen side is ticketed, with a footpath down the rock to the platforms at the water. Free, level ground on the Neuhausen side opposite, with the boat jetties on it.
Start on the ticketed side. The gate at Schloss Laufen puts a footpath down the rock past the water to the Fischetz platform, which is as close as anyone gets on foot, and the noise at that range is most of the reason to come. The bank opposite costs nothing, is level, and holds the jetties: the crossing runs about every quarter of an hour and the sailing worth waiting for is the one that lands passengers on the rock. An hour does one bank. Two hours does both, ferry included. The falls are open around the clock all year, which makes an evening walk down to them the cheapest thing in the canton and the emptiest.
