Things to do
4-

Appenzell Village
A main street of gabled houses painted with figures and lettering, a working village rather than a museum, with the Landsgemeinde square at the end where the canton votes in the open air each April.
-

Seealpsee
A lake at 1,141 metres in a bowl under the Saentis, reached on foot from Wasserauen in about an hour and a quarter. The reflection of the Alpstein wall in it is the picture the whole canton is sold on.
-
Ebenalp
A ridge at 1,644 metres reached by cable car from Wasserauen, with a path down through the Wildkirchli caves, which held the oldest prehistoric settlement in Europe at this height, to the Aescher guest house pinned under the overhang.
-
Saentis
The high point of the Alpstein at 2,502 metres, with a cable car from Schwaegalp and a tower on top, seeing six countries on a clear day because it stands alone at the north edge of the range.
