Rhine Falls
Two hours covers both banks. Pay for the castle side to walk down to the water. For the boats, go to the free side opposite.

Stein am Rhein
Halfway between Schaffhausen and Konstanz, where the Rhine leaves the Untersee, this small town has a pedestrianised centre whose houses are painted end to end with frescoes. The abbey of St. George beside the river, secularised at the Reformation, is now a museum. Boats run downstream from Schaffhausen in summer, and it makes an easy half-day trip.

Allerheiligen Abbey
In the middle of the old town, this Benedictine house founded in 1049 wraps round the largest cloister in Switzerland, part Romanesque and part Gothic. A herb garden of medicinal and monastery plants sits beside it. The buildings now hold the town museum, with art, archaeology and natural history, and its minster stands next door.

Munot
Vineyards and several stairways lead up from the old town to this circular fortress, built between 1564 and 1589 to a plan influenced by Duerer. Inside, a cobbled spiral ramp without steps once let horses haul cannon to the battlement, which looks over the rooftops. Fallow deer graze the moat, and the watchman still rings the bell at nine each evening.
